Here is the speech that my best friend & I are giving
because we are the valedictorians of our high school class. He and I are quite proud of this baby. We are definitely not speakers, so this is our amateur attempt.
“Welcome to the graduation ceremony of the class of 2012. It is a pleasure to be here today.
“To claim this position as your valedictorians is a great honor, but we definitely couldn’t have arrived here on our own. There are numerous people who have helped us along the way: those who have encouraged us, those who have inspired us, and those who have challenged us.
“First, our families and friends; it is all of you who have watched us grow from the very beginning and made sacrifices, of time, money, and yourselves, to ensure that we are provided with the maximum amount of opportunities. To those who have inspired us, in one way or another: we would like to thank you for giving us positive examples of what can come to fruition through dedication, passion, and ambition. You have shown us that it doesn’t matter what kind of house you live in or what kind of job you have; rather, what matters is finding your purpose and passion in life.
“To those who have challenged us: you have given us the skills that will be directly applicable to our lives. More than just teaching us how to conjugate Spanish verbs or integrate functions, you have shown us how to open our minds to the possibilities and take all aspects of a situation into account before making a decision. La profesora Mong, Mr. Buck, Mr. Schauer, Mrs. Jones, Ms. Watts, and Ms. Poff are just a few among the many adults at OHS who have really made an impact on our educations and lives.
“We would like to show our appreciation for you because you have done more than just taught us useful information in a meaningful way; you have exceeded what was expected of you to provide those of us who had the desire to learn with an opportunity to do so. The hard work that you have put in over the years did not go unnoticed, and will certainly not be forgotten.
“To all of those who have helped us along the way: there will never be a way that we will be able to repay you. We hope to make you proud by following your example: inspiring and leading others as they create their own path.
“Each of us has learned that courage is essential to following the paths that we have begun to create for ourselves. As this stage of our lives ends, today we embark on a new journey. This starts with stepping forward to begin shaping the life we want and molding ourselves into the people we want to be.
“The vital component of this challenge is courage. It is now that we have the opportunity to define ourselves as we wish, rather than how “they” want to see us. From this moment on, the labels we have accumulated become irrelevant: a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, a criminal. Though we may have fashioned ourselves to fit the “definitions” that others have bestowed upon us, now is the time to step outside of the box and define ourselves.
“We need to strive to reach our full potential, whether we aspire to be a hippie book editor in Chicago or a devoted father here in Ontario. Courage entails sacrifices: our path that we have chosen will not always be an easy one to navigate. The less appealing options, such as missing a party in order to write your term paper or making sacrifices of your personal wants to spend time with your children, will often yield the desired results.
“The easiest options are rarely the ones that pay off or will help us attain our goals in the long run. The courage to make the difficult choices is critical at this point in our lives, for it is these decisions that will set the stage for our futures. Making a habit of choosing the easy route now will be difficult to overcome as we move through life. Now is the time to display the courage we all have deep within us.
“With this new journey ahead of us, it is imperative that we don’t look in the rearview mirror, thinking about who we used to be and life as it was. It’s time to think about who we are to become. “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma—which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.” These wise words were spoken by Steve Jobs, a man who had the courage to follow his dreams, even when the world said “you can’t.” To the class of 2012, be inspired by everyone who has the courage to create their own path and follow it to their dreams.”
